French-Canadian Heritage Society
of Michigan

Donations and Special Projects
We welcome donations of money and items of genealogical, historical, and cultural interest to the French-Canadian Heritage Society of Michigan. Because the Society is now a 501(c)(3) charity, your donations are in whole or part deductible on your taxes.
Please note that members who donate to the Society can claim their donations as tax exemptions, but you cannot claim membership dues! Nor can you claim purchases of books or other materials from the Society. In other words, if, when you renew your membership, you send a check for $50.00, then you can only deduct $30.00, since $20.00 would go towards your membership renewal. If you donate to the Society and you require a receipt, then upon request we will generate a letter for you acknowledging the donation, the nature of the donation, and the date the gift was given. However, we will not place a value on any non-cash donated item. It remains your responsibility to assign a value for any donation you plan to deduct from your taxes. Any gift that is equal to or exceeds $250.00 in cash or estimated value requires a letter from the Society that you can submit when you file your taxes. We will send you the required acknowledgment letter for donations of $250.00 or more. Although you do not have to submit this letter with your taxes, you should keep this letter in your files in case the Internal Revenue Service challenges your donation.
Please remember that the officers of the Society are not tax experts. So do not expect tax advice from them. If you have any question regarding the Society’s tax status, then we will be happy to work with you and your tax advisor to answer the question, but under no circumstance can the officers of the Society provide you with tax advice. For more information, see the Society's charity status letter from the Internal Revenue Service. You can learn more about our charity status at our document web page.
From time to time the Society will announce special projects and will ask for donations to support the projects.
