English Translation

The French article by Gagné and Kokanosky regarding the Philippe Amiot and Anne Couvent was translated into English and published by the French-Canadian Heritage Society of Michigan (FCHSM), the full citation is:

Mise à jour, 22 avril 2007

Le dernier numéro des Mémoires de la Société généalogique vient tout juste de paraître, et bien que je n’ai pas encore reçu mon exemplaire, R.-Yves Gagné (co-auteur avec Laurent Kokanosky) m’a informé que cet article démontrait comment Mathieu et Charles Amiot, ainsi que Toussaint Ledran, descendent de Louis VIII, roi de France par Marguerite de Barbançon, femme de Robert de Joyeuse, comte de Grandpré, une branche mineure de la famille de Joyeuse. Les auteurs Gagné et Kokanosky auront été les premiers à établir ces liens inédits, et jusqu’à présent ignorés, avec le comte de Grandpré. Les ancêtres Amiot et Lean sont aussi rattachés à une ancienne et puissante famille de Verdun, les Ancherins.

On notera, que cette filiation royale n’apparaît que vers la trentième page de l’article, car, ainsi que me le faisait remarquer monsieur Gagné, l’objectif premier de la recherche était d’abord de découvrir le véritable lieu d’origine de ces pionniers canadiens, la filiation royale étant un élément secondaire. Les auteurs n’ont d’ailleurs pas jugé opportun de débattre de certains des lignages publiés sur Internet et qui, à l’évidence, sont à rejeter – preuve qu’on serait mal avisé de ne se fier qu’à ce qu’on peut trouver en ligne. L’article qui fait plus de quarante pages, mérite d’être lu lentement et avec attention, jusqu’au dernier mot.

Cet article est le fruit d’un travail considérable et, pour cette raison, les auteurs s’attendent à ce que leur droit de propriété intellectuelle, de même que les droits de la Société généalogique canadienne-française, soient respectés, notamment en ce qui a trait à la publication de leurs découvertes sur Internet.

Update, 22 April 2007

Today the issue of Mémoires de la Société généalogique canadienne française (SGCF) with the Longueval research was published.  While I have not yet received my copy, R.-Yves Gagné, co-author of the article with Laurent Kokanosky, a French national, has told me that the article shows how Mathieu and Charles Amiot, and Toussaint Ledran, are descendants of Louis VIII of France through Marguerite de Barbançon, wife of Robert de Joyeuse, comte de Grandpré, through an humble branch of the Joyeuse family.  Gagné and Kokanosky are the first to make this rather obscure and previously unpublished connection with the comte de Grandpré.  Our ancestors are also descendants of an old powerful family of the city of Verdun, des Ancherins.

Please note that M. Gagné pointed out to me that the royal connection comes in only after about 30 pages through the article, as the main interest of the co-authors was to uncover the real places of origin of our Canadian settlers, and they consider that the lineage to royalty as being only a secondary detail.  Consequently, they did not get into debates concerning lineages found on the Internet that they discarded as against the evidence, and they hope that the reader will not jump to conclusions based on what they see on the Internet only.  The article has over 40 pages, so I am convinced that it is worthwhile reading it slowly and completely.

Considering the immense amount of work necessary to prepare this article, the authors hope that others will respect their intellectual property rights as well as the SGCF's copyright and not post complete details of their findings online.  Rather, interested parties should order copies of the Mémoires from the SGCF.
