Folks,

I think moving the Burton Historical Collection to another institution that
understands and supports special collections would be grand, but let us be
realistic. There are several major obstacles to such an approach including
that you would have to get the permission of the Detroit Library
Commissioners. In addition, it would undoubtedly cost several millions of
dollars to purchase the collection, move it, build a facility for it,
reorganize it, etc. Unless a very generous benefactor steps forward, and
one with the a great talent for negotiating a complex deal, I just do not
see this as a likely outcome. Furthermore, I think many people firmly
believe that the Burton Historical Collection should remain in Detroit
because of the nature of the original gift and the content of the
collection.

Please do not get me wrong. I would rather see the Burton Historical
Collection in the hands of a much better run institutions. And if anyone
out there can work up a viable proposal, then I think I could help sell it
since most of you would be on board. I just fear it will never happen
unless thing get really much worse (for example, the millage in November
fails).

Regards,

JP
