It's my understanding/theory that Etienne went from Gelineau to Jolineaux
dit Leblanc sometime after or during his time as a voyageur (I believe)
with the Northwest Company. I don't believe the Leblanc extends back to
his immediate family in Quebec and I am not aware of a brother named
Francois. There is some very loose reference somewhere (I forget) to a
Metcalf that may have been a brother but I have seen nothing definite.

In Quebec, the family name I'm sure is most definitely GELINEAU, although
it does show up there occasionally as GELINO.

I do have a number of male Jollineau strays that may have used the Leblanc
surname but have found none yet.

See below for other changes I suggest ... Sorry I can't offer you sources
directly ... I have some but much info is from other researchers that I
have been able to cross reference somehow.

Joseph Gelineau (s.of Daniel & Margueritte Patenotre) and Therese Dufault
(d. of Louis & Marie-Louise L'huissier) .... no "J" and no "Leblanc"

d. of Joseph Duchene (aka Joe Laprairie or Mushkedewinn) & Pimeegeeshigoqua

The name Kanosh (or Cenosh, Canosh, Kenosh) comes up frequently starting
with Etienne (b.1814) and extending down 1 or 2 generations into his
immediate descendents. This is the only other one I know of. The name is
used both as a first and last name. Etienne was known as "Kanosh
Jollineau" and possibly him and his son for certain was known as "Jig
Cenosh". My father was told it was an Ojibwa (Chippewa) name but no one
can tell me what it means.

I believe birth and death dates are not right. He died 6 April 1877 and is
buried in the Queen St Cemetary in Soo Canada. Birth is 1799 or early 1800.

There's also (I believe) Joseph and Arthur Robert.

No first marriage that I am aware of. She did have at least one sister.

I think birth was maybe 1843. He married Marguerite Sayer in 1873 (not
Etienne as indicated below) and died April 1875. They had one son, Alex.

Alfred James b. 13 Dec 1885
George Walter b. 14 May 1888

Thanks for the detailed response, by the way. You did provide some details
I was not aware of, or at least are not in my database yet. I do have the
St Mary's baptisms but have not gone through them all yet.

It was in the Soo Ontario paper this week that the original books from
Garden River church were stolen along with their safe. Obviously, we all
hope the records will be returned ...

Steve.
