The Wednesday October 25th meeting for the Mid-Michigan Genealogical meeting at 7 pm will present Shirley Hodges, a well known and very popular speaker.

Shirley will talk on "What's in a Name?"

The lecture will focus on the reasons that people have the names that they do. She will also discuss the naming patterns in the United States, the use of nicknames, and other ideas for identifying people.

Shirley is the President of the Genealogical Speakers Guild and a columnist for the Global Gazette. She also
serves on the board of Board of Directors of the Courthouse Square Association, Inc. (CSA). This foundation was formed for the preservation and rehabilitation of the 1885 courthouse in Eaton County, Michigan. She also serve on the Board of Directors for the Friends of the Michigan Women's Historical Center and Hall of Fame in Lansing, Michigan.

Dinner before the meeting will take place at Old Country Buffet in Okemos at 5:30 as usual.

This is also "bring a friend" month to the Society meeting.

Other announcements:

1) Need someone to translate French onto English for you? Jennifer Wisner is able to do this, she has studied in Quebec and France. Please contact her regarding fees which will probably vary depending on the project to be translated. jennwisner at yahoo.com .

2) Interested in DNA projects? Both the October issue of Family Chronicle and September/October issue of Ancestry have articles on this fascinating aspect of genealogy. Check out your local bookstore for issues.

3) The magazine INTERNET GENEALOGY (again check out local bookstores/newscenters), has some interesting articles who like doing genealogy in the internet including information on old newspapers online, and virtual cemeteries. For the family historian there are articles on our ancestors' daily lives and American cultural history.

4) I also heard an interesting thing today, for those who use Ancestry or subscribe to it. I talked to a subscriber today and he told me that for the same search or query he will get different answers on Ancestry if he uses it at home or at the Family History Center or at the Library of Michigan. So as the saying goes "leave no stone unturned" even if you think you turned it!

Good luck to all and hope to see you at the meeting, Jim.
