I am looking for information on Joseph Chevalier b 1725 in Fort Michilimackinac, MI. He is the son of Jean Baptiste Chevalier and Francois Avaloine. He married Louisa Durocher 1749. He is said to be a trader. He was in Detroit for many years. The Chevalier family was large and were mostly traders. Joseph's brothers Louis and Charles was at Ft. St. Joseph (Niles, MI) and his brothers-in-law included: Rene Bourassa, Joseph Hins, HAINS (AINSEE) Antoine Deshetres, Antoine Lauzon, Jacques Dumay Demers, Jean Etienne Cheniers, Pierre Grigon , Charles Chaboille (Chaboiller). What I have found so far looks like they set up a family network in the trade based out of Ft. MIchelmackinac - starting around 1717 with the father Jean Bapstiste and seams to have continued until the decline of the fur trade in the 1820's.

I am interested in researching the fur trade in the territory. I would like to find company records, inventories, and stories that surround this family in the mid- 1700's to 1825. I am most interested in Joseph in Detroit.

I did find a great book - Rendezvous at the Straits - Fur Trade and Military Activities at Fort de Buade and Fort Michilimackinac, by

Timothy J. Kent.. I am now at a loss as to where to check next. I am not able to travel to Michigan for a couple more months. When I can get there, where would records for this time frame be found? Are there other books that would be of some help? Are there other people researching this?

Thank you,

Sandra A Belkofer
