On p. 283 of Denissen's Genealogy of the French Families (v.1, revised) both Josephs are listed. Joseph-Maurice was b. 1728 Michillimackinac to Jean-Baptiste CHEVALIER & Francoise ALAVOINE. He 1m. 1749 Montreal to Louise DUROSSEAU & 2m. to Marie-Josephe LANGLOIS-LACHAPELLE.
Joseph LIONARD (sic)-CHEVALIER, b. Montreal s/o Joseph LIONARD-CHEVALIER & Louise DUROCHER 1m. 1807 Detroit to Genevieve CHARBONNEAU & 2m. 1811 Detroit to Francoise CADORET.
You need to determine exactly which family your are descended from. Good luck, Jim.

Sandy,
The marriage of Joseph Chevalier, son of deceased Joseph Chevalier and Louise Durocher and Genevieve Charbonneau (Jean Baptiste & Marie Plouf) on 10 February 1807 at Ste. Anne de Detroit is summarized in Sharon Kelley, Editor, Marriage Records Ste. Anne Church Detroit 1701-1850, published in 2001, on page 60.
The summary includes the information that, in the absence of a priest, they had been married by a protestant minister at Cataracoui (modern-day Kingston, Ont.) and that he was from a parish in Montreal and she from Riviere du Chene.
I did a quick check this morning on PRDH for Joseph and Louise Durocher . (Do you know this wonderful internet source?) This Chevalier line is not related to the Michillimackinac Chevaliers.
Here is the marriage in 1766 of Joseph Chevalier and Louise Durocher:
# 212981

And here is the Couple entry for them:
Couple
of JOSEPH LEONARD POTART CHEVALIER
Death : 1797-06-25
Burial : 1797-06-26 Montréal
Father : SIMON POTART CHEVALIER
Mother : MARIE MARGUERITE GAUTHIER LOISEAU
Couple
and MARIE LOUISE DESROCHERS DUROCHER DESROCHES
Death : 1813-01-13
Burial : 1813-01-14 Montréal
Father : AUGUSTIN DESROCHERS DUROCHER
Mother : FRANCOISE MARIE ROSE BIOR
Couple
As you can see, this Joseph dit "Chevalier" family had the last name of Potart.
My first request for records on PRDH including a Joseph Chevalier pulled up 307 references. There was more than one family that used the name Chevalier in New France. What is your source for "He [Joseph] married Louisa Durocher 1749. "? The spelling of the name "Louisa" and the absence of a precise date make me believe it could be one of Denissen's guesses.

I am looking for information on Joseph Chevalier b 1725 in Fort Michilimackinac, MI. He is the son of Jean Baptiste Chevalier and Francois Avaloine. He married Louisa Durocher 1749. He is said to be a trader. He was in Detroit for many years. The Chevalier family was large and were mostly traders. Joseph's brothers Louis and Charles was at Ft. St. Joseph (Niles, MI) and his brothers-in-law included: Rene Bourassa, Joseph Hins, HAINS (AINSEE) Antoine Deshetres, Antoine Lauzon, Jacques Dumay Demers, Jean Etienne Cheniers, Pierre Grigon , Charles Chaboille (Chaboiller). What I have found so far looks like they set up a family network in the trade based out of Ft. MIchelmackinac - starting around 1717 with the father Jean Bapstiste and seams to have continued until the decline of the fur trade in the 1820's.
I am interested in researching the fur trade in the territory. I would like to find company records, inventories, and stories that surround this family in the mid- 1700's to 1825. I am most interested in Joseph in Detroit.
I did find a great book - Rendezvous at the Straits - Fur Trade and Military Activities at Fort de Buade and Fort Michilimackinac, by
Timothy J. Kent.. I am now at a loss as to where to check next. I am not able to travel to Michigan for a couple more months. When I can get there, where would records for this time frame be found? Are there other books that would be of some help? Are there other people researching this?
Thank you,
Sandra A Belkofer
