The name Sauvage is a perfectly good French name. It was originally derived from a Latin word that meant "of the forest" and this was the meaning of the word the French used to name the aboriginal people they met on the North American continent.

The later "meaning" of the English translation "savage" was a much later, and unfortunate, development.

You are correct. The references to a Métis heritage for the Sauvage family is in error. Jacques Sauvage was from Paris, and the parents of his wife, the daughter of Vivien Jean and Catherine Gateau, are also documented as from France. Unfortunately, the internet is filled with unsupported guesses.

There were other individuals with the last name Sauvage from France.

  Suzanne

I don’t read French but it has been my understanding that Marie Anne and Marie Francoise Sauvage were not of Indian descent. Their parents were Jacques Sauvage and Marie Catherine Jean. Jacques was born in France as were Marie Catherine’s parents.
However, everywhere on the Internet, I see them designated as Metis or Indian.
  Have I missed something????

  Thanks,
  Lynn Thomas
