Dear Gail;
I have been trying to learn about one of my ancestors who may have been
involved in the French and Indian War. One thing that I have discovered
is that French troops were divided among at least two types of units.
There were regular French troops in well-defined regiments for which
there are accurate muster roles. There were also a large number of
militia, who fought in irregular units, and were often French-Canadian.
There are few muster roles that existed for these troops.
My ancestor, Jean-Baptiste Ouellette, was born in Kamouraska, Quebec,
about 100 miles east of Quebec, in 1737. In 1762, at the age of 25, he
was living on the east bank of the Detroit River at what is now Windsor.
He married a local woman in 1765 and raised his family in Windsor. My
suspicion is that Jean-Baptiste was a militiaman at Fort Detroit
(Ponchatrain) and that he joined the local community at the end of the
war. The distance between Kamouraska and Windsor is over 1000 miles and
there would have been little reason to traverse this distance of
Canadian wilderness in the middle of wartime unless one were part of a
military force. Additionally, all French men of his age would have been
required under the laws of New France to be conscripted into military
forces.
The best documents locally of this era have been Father Potier's
accounts of Assumption Parish. His account for 3-5 years at the end of
the French and Indian War have never come to light. It has been
suspected that this portion of his account was destroyed by him to
protect French-Canadian soldiers who had become part of his parish.
To investigate this further, I have looked at Father Potier's records
of marriages and other family accounts from the 1760's in Assumption
Parish. I have identified names of men who were of military age at the
end of the French and Indian War, who were not named in local records
prior to the War, and who were born in another location other than
Detroit or Windsor. My hypothesis has been that these men were
militiamen at the Fort who subsequently joined the local community.
Below is some of the information that I have collected.
Please let me know if this helps, or if you are able to learn anything
further about this topic.
Sincerely, Dan Ouellette
