I had a similar request.
I had a map of northern Ontario, with my families surname. It was in a very remote area.
I called (Canadian) information for the phone number of the town, or closest town
city hall, library or newspaper. Nobody seemed to recognize the name (?)
Eventually, I was connected to a parish priest, in a nearby town.
He explained the answer to my question.
A parish priest, in his last years years of service in his small community, knew that the the end of his life was approaching. He was satisfied that his Creator would reward his service to the church, but in the absence of progeny, or any other living beings he wanted some lasting memento to his time on earth.
He drove some miles out of his small village and in a clearing, erected a sign, that simply spelled out his last name. Then he wrote a letter to the Canadian Department of Transportation, requesting that that area be named. He gave the location of the sign.
The Department of Transportation, investigated and verified the placement of the sign. Eventually, the name was removed from all official maps.
In this case a very sad, human story, but an insight into the sort of personal insight of information that can be gained with a few well placed phone calls.

was
decided that he wanted to have some small acknowledgment, of his time on earth.
