Hi Myrtle!

I don't find any of these names in any MORIN research I'm doing so far. My
GPa was Frederick Anthony MORIN, his Pa was Frederick N. MORIN (the one in
the 1928 Detroit City Directory, don't know what the "N" stood for possibly
Normand since there was a daughter Norah, F.A.'s sibling), and his GPa
(F.N.'s Pa was Antoin MORIN born in Quebec April 4, 1820{I got this date
from 1891 Canadian Census}). So far I have not been able to find much
connection/information regarding Antoin. You don't mention any dates and/or
relationships other than marriage and children.

However, I am also researching BOUCHER (my wife's family) and have come
across a number of Pierre BOUCHER's in her line. I believe, however, that
she was descended from a family in Perche, France. As far as I know, none
of my BOUCHER's had Michigan connections, although I suppose it's possible
because her family was part of the French-Canadien contingent of Drummond
Islanders moved to the La Fontaine/Penetanguishene/Midland part of Ontario
after the War of 1812. I believe Drummond Island is considered part of
Michigan now????-not sure about this. I suppose it's possible some may have
stayed to live in Michigan.

But, it leads me to a question I've been having, the exact meaning of "dit".
I know the literal French translation is "Known As". So I gather the phrase
means "actually a MORIN but called himself (known as) BOUCHER". I'm
wondering if this is how the French kept track of illegitimacy (as it was
called in the old days)???? So were his ascendants MORIN's and his
descendants BOUCHER's? Or was BOUCHER just an alias? I still don't quite
understand this terminology. In your example are you saying there were two
children named Pierre MORIN dit BOUCHER or Pierre was married twice. If
that's the case, where did the "dit BOUCHER" come from? I know many of the
wives kept their maiden name in early French-Canadien families, and the
children could have one surname or the other.

I don't know if I'm making myself clear or not in my questions, but if
anyone has any knowledge on this subject that could clear it up for me I'd
really appreciate it.

David Alexander (Al) ("Doc") Doherty (Mother is Marion Rita {nee Morin}
Doherty - Fred in Detroit 1928 directory was her GPa)

Pickering, Ontario, Canada
