That's right, Karen, and it was not only soldiers who adopted "dit" names or "dite" (feminine gender form) names.
Other individuals, men and women alike, were known by names other than their birth patronymics, to distinguish themselves from others with identical or similar names, to preserve a place name associated with a family, or even to honor an ancestor. Some founding families ended up with descendants carrying totally different names, because the original last name fell into disuse.
Also, some families who used "de" or "du" as part of an original name, for example, the descendants of André Jarret de Beauregard, dropped the "Jarret de" entirely and became Beauregard, and even Vincent, after one of André's sons.
Some sons and daughters adopted maternal last names.
There are multiple examples and reasons for the names that came into being. They are a rich heritage, although they sometimes confuse researchers at first.

My husband's ancestry is from Andre Barsa dit Lafleur....from the early 1600's....his descendants ended up dropping the Barsa around late 1700's and continued on with just Lafleur, which ended up taking on a few variations of it's own.
The dit Lafleur addition to Barsa had nothing to do with illigitamacy (to my knowledge), it was just what a soldier did when he joined the French army (similar to an employee # to differentiate amongst all the others with a similar name)....i.e. he was born Barsa but chose Lafleur as his alternate ( I don't think he ever suspected his descendants 100 years after he died would decide to go by the Lafleur name, but they did)
Thank you
KarenP
