The Fort St. Joseph Archaeological Project welcomes you to an Open House Event at the site of historic Fort St. Joseph in Niles, MI.
The Open House features excavations of Fort St. Joseph by WMU Archaeologists.
At the site, the public can watch excavating, wet-screening for
artifacts, ask questions and listen to lectures by university and guest
speakers.
Next to the excavations, the Project offers an Outdoor
Museum complete with informational panels, artifacts on display, recent
finds, "touch-me" artifacts, and archaeologists on-hand for questions.
Around the corner in the city park is the Living History Village,
complete with professional 18th century re-enactors in a canvas tent
village bringing the history of the fort to life! French soldiers from 1683 through 1763 will be on hand for musket demonstrations. British soldiers from 1763 through 1780 will stage battle skirmishes and Native allies will join the action. Live music
can be heard around the village as well as canoe voyageurs trading
their goods, merchant boats in action, cooking demonstrations, and
items for sale such as stoneware,
clothing, and personal adornment items. All re-enactors are here to
interact with the public and answer questions regarding life in the
period when the fort was active. Please feel free to engage these
people in conversation while respecting their tents and goods as these
are their weekend homes.
