Festival Joie de Vivre - a French Canadian Festival - August 28-31, 2008

 

This Festival is being sponsored by the Chassell Historical Organization at
the Chassell Heritage Center, a Keweenaw Heritage Site, in Chassell,
Michigan, Houghton County.

 

The intent of this celebration is to bring awareness to the general public
of the rich French Canadian history of the Keweenaw and of Chassell
Township, in particular.  Funds raised throughout the festival will be
funneled into the handicapped accessibility project of the Chassell Heritage
Center. 

 

Registration information will be available online at the beginning of June
2008.

The schedule: 

 

Aug. 28. Thursday evening at the Chassell Heritage Center:  Keweenaw
National Historical Park  4th Thursday in History:

The Friends of Fashion, a vintage clothing museum group, will present a
fashion show highlighting the lives of the French Canadian immigrants to the
Copper Country and Chassell, in particular.  The show will be presented in
the auditorium of the Chassell Heritage Center.  The narrative will include
references to the culture, celebrations, and customs of the French Canadian
settlers.  The show will be enhanced with a power-point projection of
vintage photos.  The evening will also include music and dance by the local
Maple Sugar Folk folk music group and delectable French Canadian desserts.

 

Aug. 29.  Friday:  The Chassell Heritage Center will be open for the entire
day for registration for the festival.  Visitors to the museum may visit
permanent exhibits highlighting the history of Chassell.  Temporary French
Canadian exhibits and videos/documentaries may be viewed. Trolley bus tours
will be available throughout the day. These Trolley Tours with guided
interpreters will visit historic French Canadian settlement areas.

In the evening on Friday,  there will be a reception for the Quebecois band,
Du Temp Antans at the VFW Hall in downtown Chassell.  The band will perform
for an hour.  Food will be available for purchase and there will be a cash
bar.

 

Aug. 30. Saturday:   Registration will be open at 9:00 at the Chassell
Heritage Center.  Workshops will begin at 10:00 and will run throughout the
day.  The three band members of Du Temp Autans will each be giving an
hour-long workshop on their particular instrument.  Other workshops will be
given, among them a 2-hour hands-on FC geneology workshop.  Over a thousand
dollars-worth of research materials will be available for use by
participants.  Interpreters will be on hand as well as members of the
Friends of Fashion, who will assist in dating old photographs.  

 

 

Also on Saturday at the Chassell Centennial Park on Pike Bay:

 

Adventure Day at the Centennial Park on Pike Bay will include log rolling
demos by the MTU Forestry Club, biking, skating, and kayaking demonstrations
by local businesses.  Other activities include mushing, and street skiing.
Traditions Alive will supervise vintage children's games by local youth
dressed in period costume.  Local musicians are invited to take advantage of
the open mic at the park pavillion throughout the day.  A favorite
traditional French Canadian food, pea soup, will be available for lunch
time.

 

The highlight of the festival is the Saturday Evening Soiree at the park
pavillion featuring the Quebec band, Du Temp Autan  (See a review at

The evening promises to be filled with great traditional French music and
dance.

Available for purchase will be favorite traditional French Canadian foods,
including Pork Pie and Sugar Tarts.

 

August 31.  Sunday:   Worshipers will convene at the Shrine in downtown
Chassell and then proceed to a service at St. Anne's Catholic Church.
