Message-ID: <2b2a40b60905120750v39c2be93pc2d09ab119225301@mail.gmail.com> Over the past few weeks, I have become aware of a number of people having problems with their computers and in danger of losing data on their hard drives amounting to weeks, months, and years of hard work. Some of these same people have not backed up their data recently, or even ever, not being aware of a method for performing the backup. There are many means available today for performing backups of your hard drive. Most involve some expense, but the expense is nothing compared to what it would cost to replace all the documents, images, etc. that you have accumulated over the years. Some of the methods available include ?no-brainer? online backups like Mozy (http://www.mozy.com) or Backblaze (http://www.backblaze.com ), or an external hard drive such as ClickFree (http://www.goclickfree.com/) or Free Agent ( http://freeagent.seagate.com/en-us/) that, after configuration for your system, will automatically perform backups of new or changed files. If you prefer a more hands-on approach where you choose to do the backups yourself, any number of ways exist to do this. You can back up your files to CD or DVD, thumb drive(s). Your Internet service provider most likely offers you several gigabytes of storage on their server, allowing you to upload files. Microsoft?s SkyDrive gives you 25GB of storage for free. Anyone using the Firefox browser can install an add-on called GSpace, allowing you to use a Gmail account (now about 7GB) for file storage, also free. For anyone choosing to backup their hard drive to any on site device such as an external hard drive, thumb drive or CD, you also should consider off site storage. After all, if you store your backups in the same location as the computer and you suffer a catastrophe (God forbid) resulting in the loss of the location of said computer, more than likely you have lost your backups as well. As I climb down from my soap box, I will just add that any expense incurred to safeguard your data is worth it. Take the time to protect your research now, before it?s too late. We know times are difficult for many individuals lately, and many of you are suffering economically.? Let me assure you, that finances are not our difficulty - Our organization is fairly stable financially.? Our problem also has nothing to do with lack of content for our journal. Unfortunately, the state of our society is in crisis due to limited member participation.? We are a society of over 300 individuals, but it is the same 10-15 people responsible for all the business our society conducts.? Many of the individuals who have been instrumental in their participation in past years have been facing health and personal issues of their own, and will be unable to continue to help out in the future.? Our society and our journal have had much success and we truly enjoy the articles you submit and the presentations we can offer to our members.? However, we need our members, especially those who are local to Southeast Michigan, to step up and help our society continue to function.? We need members with computer experience to take on roles such as Treasurer, Membership Secretary, Corresponding Secretary, and Program Director.? Currently, I am the Membership Secretary for this year, but due to the vacancy in the President's position, and the need to fill that position most importantly, I will be stepping down as Membership Secretary in order to fill that position.? But I cannot do it alone.? We need other individuals to contribute a little of their time in order to keep the society running. Even the most intensive of these positions require no more than a few hours a week, some even less.? If you enjoy our society and are in the local area, please come by the Mt. Clemens Library when we have meetings and offer to help us out.? We also need people to fill a variety of smaller posts, like proofreaders, those who can help us to set up before meetings and to clean up after meetings, to volunteer to keep the Book Collection open 1 or 2 days a week, and a Library Liaison, to keep contact with the Library staff to post our meetings and handle other details. If you can offer any assistance at any position listed above, feel free to email me at: ldicerbofchsm at gmail.com Sincerely, Loraine DiCerbo Membership Secretary French Canadian Heritage Society of Michigan -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We have been asked by the Center for French Colonial Studies to hold and joint meeting and Conference.? It will take place in October of 2010 (final date yet to be determined), and it will be in Niles, Michigan, at the site of Fort St. Joseph.? We would love for any and all of our members to attend this meeting. The registration cost for the weekend conference (Fri evening to Sunday) will be $100, and there will be a block of hotel rooms reserved for those who need to travel. At this point, we are trying to get a count of out members who may be interested in attending the conference.? If we have enough members in the Southeast Michigan area interested in attending, we may be able to arrange transportation.? However, we hope all our members and especially those members local to the Niles, Michigan area will be interested in celebrating our 30th year as a society by participating in this joint meeting.? We will most likely be having a few of our members giving presentations, and it would be wonderful to have your support! If you think you may be interested in attending this conference in October of 2010, please contact me at the email below, and we will place you on a list to receive updated information as we receive more details.
